Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya has found himself in hot water with tournament officials following a high-stakes encounter against the Kolkata Knight Riders.

The IPL governing body officially announced that the all-rounder has been fined 10 percent of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the IPL Code of Conduct during Wednesday’s clash at the Eden Gardens. In addition to the monetary penalty, a Demerit Point was added to Pandya’s disciplinary record for an on-field outburst that quickly caught the attention of the match referee.

Frustration Boils Over on the Stumps

The disciplinary action stems from an incident that took place on the fourth delivery of the 10th over during KKR’s chase. Visibly frustrated while walking back to the top of his run-up, Pandya aggressively knocked the bails off the wickets with force. According to an official statement issued by the IPL on Thursday, the MI captain was found guilty of breaching Article 2.2, which strictly prohibits the abuse of cricket equipment, clothing, or ground fixtures during a match. Standing match referee Rajiv Seth leveled the sanction, and Pandya subsequently admitted to the offense and accepted the penalty, avoiding a formal hearing.

A Tough Return for the Mumbai Skipper

The disciplinary blow rounds off a difficult comeback match for Pandya, who had just returned to the Mumbai Indians’ starting XI after a three-match injury layoff. Batting first, MI struggled to find momentum on a tricky surface, relying on a late, blistering cameo from Corbin Bosch—who smashed an unbeaten 32 off 18 balls—to post a modest total of 147/8. Despite sharp bowling spells, the total proved too small to defend. Guided by crucial contributions from Manish and Rovman Powell, KKR comfortably tracked down the target in 18.5 overs with four wickets to spare.

Playoff Race Intensifies as MI Slumps Further

The result carries massive implications for the unfolding tournament table. The crucial four-wicket victory marks KKR’s sixth win in their last seven outings, catapulting them directly into the sixth position and keeping their playoff ambitions very much alive. For the Mumbai Indians, however, the defeat compounds what has been a thoroughly miserable campaign. Deeply entrenched in ninth place with a dismal record of four wins and nine losses, the penalty on their returning skipper serves as another low point in a tough week for the franchise.
