As speculation continues to swirl over Rohit Sharma’s ODI future, former India captain Kapil Dev has urged fans to celebrate the veteran batter’s remarkable career instead of mourning his possible retirement. Reports have suggested that India’s ODI series decider against England at Lord’s could mark Rohit’s final appearance in the 50-over format after he had already retired from T20Is and Test cricket.
Speaking ahead of the much-anticipated clash, the 1983 World Cup-winning captain said every great cricketer eventually has to move on, and Rohit’s contribution to Indian cricket deserves appreciation rather than sadness. Kapil stressed that the focus should remain on the joy and unforgettable moments Rohit has given fans throughout his illustrious career.
Responding to the retirement buzz, Kapil said, “Why sad? He has given us so much happiness over the years. Everybody has to go. Sunil Gavaskar, Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, Sachin Tendulkar—everybody has to go.” He added that Rohit’s legacy should be celebrated for the entertainment and success he has brought not only to India but to cricket fans around the world.
Kapil also expressed hope that whenever Rohit decides to call time on his ODI career, he does so in style. “I hope if he’s going, he should get a hundred and go,” he remarked, wishing the veteran opener a memorable farewell.
The retirement speculation has intensified during India’s ongoing tour of England, where Rohit has struggled for runs. The 39-year-old scored 11 and 26 in the first two ODIs of the series and has accumulated 241 runs in eight ODI matches this year at an average of 30.12, with a highest score of 79.
Despite the growing rumours, there has been no official confirmation from Rohit Sharma or the BCCI regarding his retirement. For now, all eyes remain on the Lord’s ODI, where fans will be hoping to see the Indian opener produce one more memorable innings, regardless of what the future holds.
