Indian Navy officer Gurindervir Singh scripted history by becoming the first Indian to clock 10.09 seconds in the men’s 100m sprint

May 24, 2026: Indian Navy celebrated a historic achievement after Petty Officer Gurindervir Singh became the first Indian sprinter to complete the men’s 100m race in 10.09 seconds. The feat came during the 29th National Federation Cup Athletics Championships at the Birsa Munda Athletics Stadium in Ranchi. Following the achievement, the Navy proudly posted on X, “THE FASTEST MAN IN INDIA WEARS WHITES,” praising Gurindervir’s dedication and record-breaking performance.

With his sensational timing, Gurindervir not only created a new national record but also qualified for the 2026 Asian Games and Commonwealth Games. Speaking after the race, the sprinter said mental strength played a key role in his success. He expressed happiness over his performance and said he hopes to continue delivering strong results in the future. Gurindervir highlighted that staying mentally focused during the final moments of the race helped him perform at his best.

The championship witnessed a dramatic battle between Gurindervir and Animesh Kujur. On Friday, Gurindervir first broke the national record with a 10.17-second run in the semifinal. Minutes later, Animesh reclaimed the record by clocking 10.15 seconds. However, Gurindervir had the final word in the final race, smashing the record again with his historic 10.09-second sprint. Animesh finished second, while Pranav Gurav secured third place. The achievement marks a major milestone for Indian athletics and sprinting history.
