Indian javelin star Neeraj Chopra made his long-awaited return to competition with a fourth-place finish at the Doha Diamond League, marking his first event of the season after recovering from injury.

Chopra’s best throw of 85.69 metres, achieved on his third attempt, was enough to comfortably surpass the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) qualifying mark of 82.61m for the upcoming Commonwealth Games. However, it wasn’t enough to secure a podium finish in a highly competitive field.

Rumesh Pathirage Continues Dream Season

The biggest story of the evening belonged to Sri Lankan javelin thrower Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage, who claimed victory with a throw of 88.68m.

The podium was completed by:

  • Anderson Peters – 86.38m (2nd)
  • Curtis Thompson – 85.99m (3rd)

Chopra finished just behind them in fourth.

Pathirage Emerging as a Global Contender

Pathirage has transformed from a promising youngster into one of the world’s most consistent javelin throwers.

His Doha victory followed his remarkable triumph at the Rome Diamond League, where he produced a world-leading throw of 92.62m.

This season, the Sri Lankan has already recorded:

  • 92.62m
  • 89.37m
  • 89.28m
  • 88.68m

Those performances have firmly established him among the world’s elite.

Chopra’s Advice Proves Prophetic

Earlier this year at the Neeraj Chopra Classic in Bengaluru, Chopra encouraged Pathirage to become more confident both on and off the field.

He advised the Sri Lankan to improve his English and get comfortable speaking publicly, telling him that he would soon become a regular podium finisher.

That prediction now appears to be coming true as Pathirage continues to impress on the international circuit.

Interestingly, Pathirage has previously said he admires Chopra’s consistency more than any other aspect of world javelin, even while acknowledging the immense power of Arshad Nadeem.

Positives for Neeraj Despite Missing the Podium

Although Chopra narrowly missed the medals, his performance offered several encouraging signs.

After opening with a foul, he responded with throws of:

  • 82.77m
  • 85.69m
  • 83.45m

Most importantly, he completed the competition without any visible discomfort following the injury that delayed his season debut.

With the World Championships, Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games still ahead this season, Chopra will be pleased to have returned to competition in good physical condition while already achieving the Commonwealth Games qualifying standard.
