PV Sindhu Returns to World Top 10 Rankings, Advances to Indonesia Open Second Round

Indian badminton star PV Sindhu has achieved a significant milestone in her comeback journey, re-entering the top 10 of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) women’s singles rankings for the first time since 2023.

The latest rankings released by the BWF place Sindhu at world No. 10, marking her return to the elite group of players after a prolonged period outside the top 10. The rise comes as the two-time Olympic medallist continues her campaign at the Indonesia Open 2026.

Sindhu Back Among the World’s Best

Sindhu climbed one position in the latest rankings to secure the 10th spot, reaffirming her status as one of India’s most accomplished and consistent badminton players.

The former world champion has enjoyed a resurgence in recent months, producing improved performances on the international circuit and regaining valuable ranking points.

Her return to the top 10 represents another important achievement in a career that already includes multiple historic milestones for Indian badminton.

Sindhu remains India’s highest-ranked women’s singles player.

Following her in the rankings is rising Indian star Unnati Hooda, who occupies the 23rd position in the women’s singles standings.

Olympic Medallist Continues Indonesia Open Campaign

The ranking boost comes during Sindhu’s ongoing participation at the Indonesia Open, one of the most prestigious tournaments on the BWF World Tour.

The Indian shuttler booked her place in the second round after defeating Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan in straight games.

Although the scoreline suggested a comfortable victory, Sindhu had to overcome stiff resistance from her Thai opponent before securing a 25-23, 21-16 win in a match lasting 51 minutes.

The opening game proved particularly challenging, with both players exchanging points in a tightly contested battle. Sindhu eventually edged ahead in the closing stages before carrying her momentum into the second game.

Her trademark attacking style and aggressive court coverage played a crucial role in helping her complete the victory in straight games.

Potential Showdown With World No. 1

Sindhu now appears set for one of the toughest challenges in women’s badminton.

She is expected to face reigning Olympic champion and current world No. 1 An Se-young of South Korea in the next round.

The two players met recently in the Singapore Open quarterfinals, where the South Korean emerged victorious.

The head-to-head record heavily favours An Se-young, who has won all nine previous encounters against Sindhu.

Despite the daunting statistics, Sindhu will hope that her improved form and renewed confidence can help her challenge the world No. 1 at one of the season’s biggest tournaments.

An Se-young Continues to Lead Rankings

South Korean superstar An Se-young remains firmly at the top of the women’s singles rankings.

The Olympic champion has established herself as the dominant force in women’s badminton over the past few seasons and continues to hold a significant lead over her closest rivals.

Her consistency across major tournaments has helped her maintain the No. 1 position heading into the latter stages of the 2026 season.

Lakshya Sen Remains India’s Top Men’s Singles Player

In the men’s singles rankings, Lakshya Sen continues to be India’s highest-ranked player.

The Indian shuttler occupies the 10th spot with 69,373 ranking points.

Meanwhile, China’s Shi Yu Qi remains the world No. 1 in men’s singles with 108,905 points.

However, Lakshya’s Indonesia Open campaign came to an early end after he suffered a first-round defeat on Tuesday.

Former world No. 1 Kidambi Srikanth also exited the tournament in the opening round, leaving Sindhu as one of India’s leading hopes in the competition.

A Significant Milestone for Indian Badminton

Sindhu’s return to the top 10 is an encouraging development for Indian badminton ahead of a packed international calendar.

The Hyderabad-born star remains one of India’s most successful athletes, having won a silver medal at the Rio Olympics in 2016 and a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

Her ability to regain a place among the world’s top-ranked players highlights her resilience and determination after battling injuries and fluctuations in form over the past few seasons.

With the Indonesia Open still underway and major tournaments on the horizon, Sindhu now has an opportunity to build further momentum and strengthen her position among badminton’s elite players.
