The former WWE star Ronda Rousey said she returned in 2022 expecting a major singles rivalry with Becky Lynch, but the storyline was ultimately abandoned despite Vince McMahon approving the idea earlier.
Former WWE star
has revealed that one of the biggest storylines she wanted during her second WWE run never actually happened. Years after her WrestleMania 35 main event appearance, Rousey said she only agreed to return to WWE because she believed the company would finally deliver a major singles feud against Becky Lynch.
The revelation has sparked major discussion online among wrestling fans, especially after Rousey explained that she had personally created an entire presentation detailing how the rivalry should unfold on WWE television.
Ronda Rousey Says She Pitched Long-Term Becky Lynch Storyline
Speaking during an interview with Zack Heydorn of SI’s The Takedown, Rousey explained that the Becky Lynch feud was originally planned following their WrestleMania 35 clash.
At WrestleMania 35 in 2019, Becky Lynch defeated both Rousey and Charlotte Flair in WWE’s historic Winner Takes All main event, becoming the centrepiece of one of the company’s biggest women’s storylines.
Soon after the match, Rousey stepped away from WWE television as she prepared to start a family. However, before leaving, she reportedly pitched a long-term singles program with Lynch that she believed could become one of WWE’s biggest women’s rivalries ever.
According to Rousey, she even printed a detailed presentation explaining how the storyline should progress across WWE programming. She wanted the feud to feel massive while also remaining simple enough for casual viewers to easily follow.
Rousey claimed that Vince McMahon and WWE officials were highly supportive of the idea at the time and loved the pitch.
WWE Changed Direction After Rousey Returned
However, when Rousey eventually returned to WWE in 2022 after her pregnancy break, she discovered that the company had seemingly moved away from the Becky Lynch storyline entirely.
Although WWE briefly teased tension between the two stars, the rivalry never properly materialised. Instead, Rousey entered a feud with Charlotte Flair and became involved in SmackDown’s women’s title picture.
As a result, the long-anticipated singles match between Rousey and Becky Lynch never took place despite years of fan speculation and WWE teasing.
The revelation surprised many wrestling fans online, with several people reacting to the news that such a major feud was once actively planned behind the scenes.
Rousey Opens Up About WWE Backstage Environment
Rousey also reflected on her second WWE run during an interview with Complex, where she described the backstage atmosphere as stressful and uncertain during that period.
She explained that creative plans often changed frequently and many wrestlers felt anxious about how shows would eventually play out.
At the same time, Rousey praised Triple H after he took over WWE creative responsibilities. She admitted that she had always supported his vision for the company and described herself as “Team Triple H.”
However, Rousey said she never truly got the chance to fully experience WWE under his leadership before eventually stepping away again.
