India captain Shreyas Iyer finally celebrated his first victory as T20I skipper after guiding the Men in Blue to a dominant seven-wicket win over Zimbabwe in the opening match of the three-match T20I series in Harare on Thursday.
The convincing triumph ended Iyer’s difficult start as captain. Before the Zimbabwe tour, India had suffered a 2-0 series defeat against Ireland and a 4-0 loss to England, with one match ending without a result due to rain.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Lights Up Harare
Chasing a modest target of 126, India completed the chase in just 13.2 overs, thanks to a sensational innings from 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who blasted his maiden international half-century in only 18 balls.
The teenage batting sensation scored 50 off 18 deliveries, setting the tone for India’s successful chase before being dismissed. Captain Shreyas Iyer remained unbeaten on 28, while Ishan Kishan contributed 35, ensuring India crossed the finish line with ease.
Bowlers Set Up India’s Victory
Earlier, Iyer won the toss and elected to bowl first, a decision that paid immediate dividends as India’s pace attack kept Zimbabwe under constant pressure.
Mayank Yadav delivered an impressive spell, returning figures of 2/18 in four overs, while Prince Yadav chipped in with 2/19. Ravi Bishnoi and Shivam Dube also claimed a wicket each as Zimbabwe were restricted to 125/7.
Zimbabwe’s Tadiwanashe Marumani fought hard with an unbeaten 39, but the hosts failed to build meaningful partnerships against India’s disciplined bowling attack.
Iyer Creates Unique Toss Record
Apart from registering his maiden win as India’s T20I captain, Shreyas Iyer also etched his name into the record books.
The right-handed batter became the first captain in men’s T20I history to win the toss in each of his first eight matches as captain, surpassing the previous record of seven consecutive toss wins held by Bahamas skipper Gregory Taylor.
Among Indian captains, MS Dhoni previously held the record with seven successive toss wins between May 2010 and February 2012.
Shreyas Iyer Delighted With Team’s Performance
Speaking after the victory, Iyer praised his team’s all-round display and reserved special praise for Mayank Yadav and young opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
“Exceptional. They were tremendous in their execution. Can’t be happier to get my first win. I was anticipating the bounce, and there was a decent amount of it. Exceptional start given by Mayank. Didn’t give them room. Vaibhav came out and gave us an exceptional start with the bat. They analysed the pitch and started building partnerships, and that’s when I wanted to rotate my bowlers as well. He is fearless; the way he approaches the innings is amazing. He possesses immense confidence when he steps onto the field,” Iyer said.
Mayank Yadav Named Player of the Match
Fast bowler Mayank Yadav earned the Player of the Match award after dismantling Zimbabwe’s top order with figures of 2/18. He said bowling in Zimbabwe’s conditions suited his style and expressed satisfaction at contributing to India’s victory.
“It always feels great when you contribute in a win. So it was a very special moment for me. The wicket was very good. After playing in India, I was enjoying bowling here. It’s my first time here in Zimbabwe. The bounce I got and the seam movement were a great help to me. We got a good start from the very first ball and the way they [Prince and Ashok] were squeezing from their end was really good,” he said.
India now lead the three-match T20I series 1-0 and will look to seal the contest in the second match after a commanding all-round performance in Harare.
