Sweden made a dream start to their Group F clash against Tunisia at Estadio Monterrey, taking the lead inside seven minutes thanks to a brilliant strike from Yasin Ayari.
The 22-year-old midfielder, who plays for Brighton & Hove Albion, unleashed a powerful volley from around 20 yards after a poor Tunisian clearance fell perfectly into his path.
The goal immediately became a contender for one of the best strikes of the tournament.
Ayari’s Emotional Response After Scoring
While most players would celebrate wildly after scoring their first World Cup goal, Ayari reacted very differently.
As his Sweden teammates rushed over to celebrate, the midfielder raised both hands toward the Tunisia supporters in the stadium as a gesture of apology.
The moment quickly caught the attention of fans watching around the world.
Ayari’s decision was deeply personal. Although he represents Sweden internationally, he has strong family ties to North Africa.
His father is Tunisian, while his mother is Moroccan.
Why Ayari Chose Sweden Over Tunisia
Despite his Tunisian heritage, Ayari chose to represent Sweden throughout his youth career and eventually at senior level.
According to reports, Tunisian football officials approached him in 2021 and attempted to convince him to switch allegiance ahead of the 2022 World Cup cycle.
However, Ayari and his father, Azzouz, decided to remain committed to Sweden.
Speaking to Swedish media last month, Azzouz explained the family’s decision.
“My son wanted to play for Tunisia, but I asked him to represent Sweden instead, as it is the country that welcomed and developed him.”
He added that Sweden had given their family opportunities and that representing the country was a way of giving something back.
Ayari has also spoken openly about his identity.
“I was born in Sweden and feel Swedish, and Sweden is the country I want to represent,” he said.
Tunisia Coach Shows Respect
Before the World Cup match, Tunisia head coach Sabri Lamouchi made it clear that there was no bitterness regarding Ayari’s choice.
Lamouchi acknowledged knowing both Ayari and his brother and praised the midfielder’s talent.
“I have a lot of respect for his decision. He is a very good player,” Lamouchi said before the match.
The Tunisian coach also wished the player success after their World Cup encounter.
Dream Start for Sweden
Ayari’s spectacular strike gave Sweden an early advantage in a crucial Group F match.
Sweden entered the tournament hoping to make a strong return to the World Cup after missing the 2022 edition. With talented players such as Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyökeres leading the attack, expectations are high for the Scandinavian side.
However, Ayari’s goal will be remembered not only for its quality but also for the respect he showed immediately afterward.
In a tournament often defined by passion and celebration, the midfielder’s gesture highlighted the emotional connection many players have to more than one nation.
