With just one day left in June, India has received only 92.2 mm of rainfall against the normal 157.7 mm. Meteorologists say a strengthening El Niño has stalled the southwest monsoon, leaving all four regions of the country facing significant rainfall deficits.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued weather alerts for multiple states, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, and strong winds over the coming days. While several regions are expected to witness intense monsoon activity, parts of East Uttar Pradesh and Vidarbha may continue to experience heatwave conditions.
