Seasoned diplomat and Mandarin speaker Vikram Doraiswami assumes charge in Beijing as India and China work
May 3, 2026: India’s Ambassador-designate to China, Vikram Doraiswami, arrived in Beijing on Sunday to take up his new role, receiving a warm welcome from senior officials of both countries. Among those present were Li Jianbo from China’s Foreign Ministry and Angeline Premalatha from the Indian Embassy. Doraiswami had reached Shanghai a day earlier before proceeding to the Chinese capital.
A 1992-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, Doraiswami succeeds Pradeep Kumar Rawat and brings extensive diplomatic experience, including his recent tenure as India’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. Known for his fluency in Mandarin, he has previously served in both Hong Kong and Beijing, where he developed strong familiarity with Chinese language and culture.
His appointment comes at a crucial time as India and China attempt to rebuild ties strained since the 2020 eastern Ladakh standoff. Diplomatic efforts are currently underway to restore normal relations, including resuming visa services and direct flights. Chinese observers have also noted the symbolic meaning of Doraiswami’s Chinese name, “Wei Jiameng,” which reflects hopes for stronger bilateral engagement.
