Balive, he was severely exhausted after spending days attempting to carve a path through thick woodland in an effort to reach safety.

“Exhausted from trying to cut his own way out, the man was found by local volunteers on the left bank of the Pilevka River, a kilometre away from his abandoned car,” the report stated.

Emergency personnel carried the elderly man across the difficult terrain before handing him over to paramedics. He is believed to be recovering after receiving medical treatment.

Another Extraordinary Russian Survival Story

The rescue follows another dramatic survival incident in Russia last year.

In 2024, 46-year-old Mikhail Pichugin was rescued after spending 67 days adrift in a small boat on the freezing Sea of Okhotsk. Tragically, his brother and teenage son did not survive the ordeal.

The Sea of Okhotsk, bordered by Russia’s eastern Siberia and the Kamchatka Peninsula, is considered the coldest sea in East Asia and remains frozen for much of the year between October and March.

Following his rescue, Pichugin’s wife told Russian state media that his body weight—around 100 kilograms (220 pounds)—may have helped him survive the prolonged ordeal.
