European leaders pledged stronger defense cooperation, continued support for Ukraine
June 25, 2026: Leaders of five major European nations, collectively known as the E5, met in Germany ahead of the NATO summit scheduled in Turkey next month. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz hosted French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, and outgoing British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Following the meeting, Merz emphasized Germany’s commitment to strengthening its military capabilities and defense industry within NATO and Europe, saying a stronger Germany would contribute to greater regional security.
French President Emmanuel Macron highlighted Europe’s commitment to the transatlantic alliance despite recent tensions with the United States. He said European nations are increasing defense spending, expanding military capabilities, and working together to strengthen deterrence. Macron also pointed to the recent G7 summit as evidence of improving relations between Europe and the US. In a joint statement, E5 leaders reaffirmed their commitment to Euro-Atlantic security and stressed the importance of strengthening NATO’s European pillar.
The leaders also reiterated their support for Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia, pledging continued financial, economic, and energy-sector assistance. Merz urged Russia to engage in peace talks and emphasized that Europe’s support for Kyiv remains firm. Meanwhile, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte traveled to Washington for talks with US President Donald Trump amid ongoing concerns over NATO spending and US troop commitments in Europe. The discussions are expected to focus on maintaining alliance unity ahead of the NATO summit.
