Three nations urge global action and dialogue as Cuba faces humanitarian crisis and US pressure

April 19, 2026: In a coordinated diplomatic move, Mexico, Spain and Brazil issued a joint statement expressing deep concern over the worsening situation in Cuba. The three countries described the situation as a “grave humanitarian crisis” and called for urgent measures to ease the suffering of the Cuban people. The appeal comes amid increasing pressure on the island nation and rising global attention on its deteriorating economic and social conditions.

The statement was finalised during a summit in Barcelona, hosted by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, and attended by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The leaders emphasised the need for “sincere and respectful dialogue” in line with international law and stressed that any resolution must ensure that the Cuban people decide their own future freely. They also highlighted the importance of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and peaceful conflict resolution.

The diplomatic push comes against the backdrop of heightened tensions involving Donald Trump, who has issued repeated warnings regarding Cuba and hinted at possible action. Reports indicate that growing pressure, including restrictions affecting fuel supplies, has worsened the island’s economic crisis. As global concerns rise, the situation remains fragile, with calls intensifying for dialogue to prevent further escalation and to find a lasting solution to the crisis.
