Abbas Araghchi says Strait of Hormuz open for commercial vessels during ceasefire

April 17, 2026: Iran has announced the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz for all commercial vessels, signalling a temporary easing of tensions in the region. The move comes in the backdrop of an ongoing ceasefire linked to developments involving Israel and Lebanon.

Making the announcement, Abbas Araghchi said the passage through the strategic waterway would remain “completely open” for the duration of the ceasefire. The decision is expected to stabilise maritime activity in one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes.

The Strait of Hormuz plays a vital role in global energy supply, with a significant share of crude oil shipments passing through it daily. Iran’s decision to allow unhindered commercial movement is likely to ease concerns in international markets, at least for the duration of the truce.
