Relations between Iran and the United States remain tense despite recent diplomatic efforts. Iran has warned that it will take “reciprocal action” if the US fails to honour its commitments. The statement comes just days after US President Donald Trump declared that the ceasefire with Tehran was “over.”
Iran’s Foreign Ministry said any violation of agreements by the United States would receive a matching response. At the same time, Tehran rejected Trump’s claim that Iran had requested Washington to continue negotiations.
Iran Rejects Trump’s Claims on Talks
According to Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Tehran did not ask the United States to restart negotiations.
Instead, the spokesperson said Iran accepted a visit by Qatari mediators to explore diplomatic options. “We did not request negotiations with the US, but we accepted the Qatari mediators’ trip to Iran,” the ministry said in a statement carried by Iranian state television.
The remarks directly contradict Trump’s recent comments that suggested Iran wanted to continue discussions with Washington.
Top Iranian Leader Says Iran Will Not Surrender
Iranian Parliament Speaker and senior negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said ending the conflict is important, but surrender is not an option for Iran.
He stated that while many countries want the fighting to stop, Iran will continue to defend itself if the United States violates any understanding between the two sides.
“Ending the war is a priority for the countries of the world, but everyone must know that this confrontation will never end with Iran’s surrender,” Ghalibaf said.
He also claimed that he had told US Vice President JD Vance during negotiations that Iran does not trust the United States.
According to Ghalibaf, meaningful negotiations are only possible when a country is prepared to defend itself. “From my point of view, those who can negotiate with America are those who are prepared for war,” he added.
Khomeini’s Grandson Criticises Peace Talks
Ali Khomeini, the grandson of Islamic Republic founder Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, also made strong remarks about negotiations with the United States.
He argued that Iran’s discussions with Washington should not be viewed as peace talks. Instead, he described negotiations as another form of confrontation.
Ali Khomeini said that seeking peace with the United States would go against the principles of the Islamic Republic. He also claimed that anyone promoting friendship with America was acting against Iran’s interests.
US-Iran Tensions Continue Despite Agreement
Although Iran and the United States reached an agreement last month, tensions have remained high across the Middle East.
Both countries have exchanged attacks since the deal was signed, raising concerns that the ceasefire could collapse.
The situation temporarily became calmer during the week-long funeral of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. However, reports of explosions in Iran emerged shortly after the funeral ended. The United States denied any involvement in those incidents.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has said that he remains open to further discussions with Iran despite his recent criticism of Tehran.
Qatar Continues Mediation Efforts
Qatar is continuing its role as a mediator between the two countries.
A Qatari delegation arrived in Iran on Friday to hold talks with Iranian officials. The discussions are expected to focus on reducing tensions and exploring ways to keep diplomatic channels open.
Despite these efforts, public statements from both Washington and Tehran suggest that trust remains low, making future negotiations uncertain.
