While the international community has welcomed the US-Iran peace understanding, several Israeli leaders

June 15, 2026: The recently announced peace understanding between the United States and Iran has been welcomed by several countries, including India, as a step towards restoring stability in West Asia and ensuring safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. However, the agreement has triggered strong criticism in Israel, where political leaders have expressed concerns about its impact on national security. The conflict began on February 28 after a joint US-Israel military operation against Iran and later expanded across the region, drawing in Gulf nations and escalating tensions with Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir stated that Israel would not be bound by any agreement reached between Washington and Tehran. He stressed that Israel remains a sovereign nation and must prioritize its own security interests. Ben-Gvir argued that past international agreements had weakened Israel’s security and warned against making concessions under external pressure. He also called for continued action against Hezbollah and maintaining Israel’s operational freedom in Lebanon.

Criticism also came from opposition leader Yair Lapid and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich. Lapid described the reported agreement as a diplomatic setback and accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government of failing to influence US policy on Iran. Smotrich called the deal harmful for both Israel and the wider international community, insisting that pressure on Tehran should continue. Political analyst Gayil Talshir suggested Netanyahu’s recent actions were aimed at appealing to his right-wing support base but may have ultimately weakened Israel’s position as the US accelerated efforts to finalize the agreement with Iran.
