April 25, 2026: Following a series of military coups, the ruling juntas in Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso have shifted away from traditional Western alliances and sought security assistance from Russia to combat escalating militant threats. This realignment marks a major geopolitical change in the Sahel region.

Despite these efforts, security conditions across the three countries have continued to deteriorate. Analysts report a sharp rise in militant activity, while government forces have also faced accusations of carrying out civilian killings against those suspected of supporting armed groups.

In one of the most significant recent incidents, an al-Qaida-linked group claimed responsibility for an attack in 2024 targeting Bamako’s airport and a military training camp in Mali’s capital. The assault reportedly resulted in heavy casualties, highlighting the persistent instability in the region.
