Growing public anger over inflation and political issues has sparked major protests in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir

June 9, 2026: Tensions have intensified in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoK) as large-scale protests against the Pakistani government gain momentum. Anticipating a major public movement, authorities have suspended mobile and internet services across the region for seven days and increased security measures in several sensitive areas.

The protests, organised under the banner of the Awami Action Committee, are reportedly driven by concerns over rising inflation, governance issues, and demands related to refugee representation. Reports indicate that thousands of personnel from the Punjab Police, paramilitary forces, and the Pakistan Army have been deployed to maintain order and prevent the demonstrations from escalating.

Ahead of the planned protests, clashes and firing incidents were reported in areas including Rawalakot, with claims of casualties emerging from the unrest. Curfew-like restrictions have also been imposed in Muzaffarabad. The situation remains tense as authorities continue their crackdown, while protesters press ahead with demands for economic relief and political reforms.
