An Indian-crewed chemical tanker was intercepted by Iranian forces in the Strait of Hormuz, raising fresh concerns over maritime safety in the region.

April 28, 2026: An Indian-crewed chemical tanker, Chiron 7, was intercepted by Iranian coast guard vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, with warning shots fired during the tense encounter. The ship, sailing under the Togo flag near Shinas, had 24 crew members on board, including 17 Indians. While all crew members are safe, three individuals—including two Indians—sustained minor injuries.

According to officials from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, the tanker was part of a convoy when Iranian patrol boats ordered vessels to halt. The incident is part of a broader pattern of maritime disruptions in the region, which has seen multiple confrontations involving ships with Indian crew in recent weeks. The vessel is now reported to be heading towards Sharjah.

The situation reflects rising geopolitical tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel, turning one of the world’s busiest energy corridors into a high-risk zone. With several recent incidents reported, concerns are mounting over the safety of Indian seafarers and the stability of global shipping routes passing through the Gulf.
