The United States and Iran have reportedly agreed on a framework deal to extend the current ceasefire by 60 days, according to sources quoted by AFP. However, the proposed memorandum of understanding still requires approval from US President Donald Trump before it can move forward.
The development comes amid ongoing diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran aimed at preventing further escalation in the region and reopening negotiations around Iran’s nuclear programme.
Sources familiar with the discussions told AFP that both sides had broadly agreed to extend the ceasefire and initiate formal talks focused on Iran’s nuclear activities.
Iran Yet To Formally Accept Proposal: Report
Despite reports of progress, the agreement is not yet finalised.
According to an Axios report, Iran has also not formally approved the proposed framework deal. The report suggests that while negotiators have made headway on key points, important political and security concerns remain unresolved on both sides.
The proposed memorandum of understanding is expected to outline temporary ceasefire conditions and establish a negotiation window during which both countries would discuss broader issues linked to sanctions, regional security and Tehran’s nuclear programme.
Ceasefire Seen As Attempt To Avoid Wider Conflict
The reported breakthrough follows weeks of rising tensions between the United States and Iran, including military strikes, threats of retaliation and disputes over shipping routes in the Gulf region.
Diplomatic channels involving regional mediators have been active in recent weeks in an attempt to avoid a wider military confrontation.
The ceasefire extension is being viewed as a temporary stabilisation measure while negotiations continue behind closed doors.
Nuclear Talks Expected To Be Central Focus
The framework agreement is also expected to reopen discussions surrounding Iran’s nuclear activities, a long-standing source of friction between Tehran and Washington.
The United States has repeatedly demanded tighter restrictions on Iran’s uranium enrichment programme, while Iran has sought sanctions relief and guarantees against future military action.
Neither the White House nor Iranian officials have officially released details of the draft understanding so far.
