Ukraine expands global partnerships as war with Russia continues and geopolitical tensions reshape alliances
April 25, 2026: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a “very productive” meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Jeddah, focusing on strategic cooperation in security, energy, and food sectors. Zelenskyy highlighted Ukraine’s offer to share its expertise in air defence systems, particularly in countering drone threats, as part of a broader diplomatic outreach to Gulf nations. The visit reflects Kyiv’s efforts to strengthen ties in the Middle East amid ongoing conflict and shifting global alignments.
At the same time, global attention is turning to the upcoming G20 summit in Miami, where Vladimir Putin has been invited. While US President Donald Trump indicated that Putin’s participation would be “helpful,” uncertainty remains over whether the Russian leader will attend in person. The development signals a potential shift in diplomatic engagement, even as Russia continues to face isolation following its invasion of Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Ukraine is strengthening ties with Europe, securing a €90 billion EU loan to support its defence and infrastructure needs. However, leaders such as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz have ruled out immediate EU membership for Ukraine, calling it a long-term process. As the war continues, both Ukraine and Russia face mounting challenges—ranging from battlefield logistics to economic strain—while diplomatic efforts and global alliances continue to evolve.
