World Health Assembly Begins Monday Amid Global Funding Challenges

The World Health Organization will hold the 79th World Health Assembly in Geneva from May 18 to 23 to discuss major global health priorities and reforms.

May 17, 2026: The Seventy-ninth World Health Assembly will take place in Geneva from May 18 to 23 amid growing financial pressures and renewed efforts to achieve “Health for All.” According to the World Health Organization, member states are expected to adopt several decisions and resolutions aimed at shaping global health policies for the 2025–2028 period.

The assembly, which serves as the highest decision-making body of the WHO, brings together health ministers from 194 countries. Discussions this year will focus on reforming the global health system, strengthening international coordination and aligning health priorities with broader United Nations reform efforts. Key policy areas include tuberculosis, antimicrobial resistance, precision medicine, emergency healthcare and international recruitment of health personnel.

Member states will also review WHO’s budget and financing plans for 2026–2027, assess the implementation of International Health Regulations and discuss responses to global health emergencies. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is expected to address delegates during the opening session under the theme “Reshaping global health: a shared responsibility.”
