As of Monday, May 11, 2026, petrol and diesel prices across major Indian metros have remained largely stable, despite a highly volatile international market.
In the national capital, New Delhi, petrol continues to retail at ₹94.77 per litre, while diesel is priced at ₹87.67 per litre. Meanwhile, Mumbai maintains the highest rates among the four major metros, with petrol holding steady at ₹103.54 and diesel at ₹90.03 per litre.
While the majority of cities saw no revision today, minor fluctuations were recorded in select regions. Noida witnessed a slight increase, with petrol rising by ₹0.22 to reach ₹95.12, and diesel climbing to ₹88.29. Conversely, Hyderabad and Chennai saw marginal decreases of ₹0.04 in petrol prices. These small adjustments reflect the localized impact of freight charges and VAT, even as the base price remains frozen by state-owned Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs).
OMCs Absorb Massive Losses to Shield Consumers
The persistence of stable retail rates is a result of a massive financial buffer provided by IOC, BPCL, and HPCL. Reports suggest that OMCs are currently absorbing losses of roughly ₹1,600 to ₹1,700 crore per day to insulate the Indian economy from the global energy shock. Following the outbreak of conflict in West Asia and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, cumulative losses for these firms have reportedly surpassed ₹1 lakh crore over the past ten weeks, raising concerns about the long-term sustainability of current price levels.
PM Modi’s Appeal for Energy Restraint
In light of the ongoing West Asia crisis, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasized the need for “energy restraint.” Speaking at an event in Telangana, the Prime Minister urged citizens to use petrol, diesel, and gas judiciously to save foreign exchange and cushion the country against the adverse impacts of the US-Iran conflict. He highlighted India’s progress in solar power and ethanol blending as vital tools for navigating this global crisis, reiterating that imported energy resources must be used only when necessary.
