With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing severe heatwave warnings and school timings in Noida and Ghaziabad shifting to an early 12:30 PM dispersal, the risk of heat-related illnesses in children has reached a critical level. Because children’s bodies heat up three to five times faster than adults’, parents must be hyper-vigilant during the peak hours of 12 PM to 4 PM.

1. Spotting the Signs: Heat Exhaustion vs. Heatstroke

Recognizing the transition from “tiredness” to a “medical emergency” is vital.

  • Heat Exhaustion (The Warning Phase): Look for heavy sweating, physical weakness, dizziness, intense thirst, and a mild headache. The skin may feel cool and clammy.
  • Heatstroke (The Emergency Phase): This occurs when the body temperature hits 40°C (104°F). Signs include hot, red, and dry skin (sweating may stop), confusion, rapid heartbeat, vomiting, or fainting.

2. Immediate First Aid for Parents

If your child shows signs of heat stress after returning from school:

  • Cool Down Fast: Move them to an air-conditioned room or a shaded area with a fan.
  • External Cooling: Apply damp, cool cloths to the neck, armpits, and groin area where blood vessels are closest to the skin.
  • Hydrate Strategically: Offer small sips of cool water or ORS (Oral Rehydration Salts). Avoid sugary sodas or “energy drinks” which can worsen dehydration.
  • When to Call 108: If the child is confused, stops sweating, or loses consciousness, seek emergency medical help immediately.

3. Preventive “Heat-Proofing” for School & Home

  • The 20-Minute Rule: Encourage your child to drink water every 15–20 minutes, regardless of whether they feel thirsty.
  • Dress Code: Stick to loose-fitting, light-colored cotton uniforms. Cotton allows sweat to evaporate, cooling the skin naturally. Avoid synthetic fabrics like polyester.
  • The “Water Bell” Habit: Since many schools have implemented a “water bell,” reinforce this at home. Ensure they carry a large, insulated water bottle and a wide-brimmed hat for the commute.
  • Travel Safety: With the current heatwave, car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in under 10 minutes. Never leave a child in a parked car, even with the windows cracked.

4. Dietary Adjustments for 45°C Heat

  • Water-Rich Foods: Include watermelon, cucumbers, and oranges in school lunchboxes.
  • Avoid Heavy Meals: Large, protein-heavy meals can increase metabolic heat. Opt for light, easily digestible food.
  • Natural Coolants: Buttermilk (Chaas), Aam Panna, and Coconut Water are excellent for maintaining electrolyte balance.
