In a chilling incident reported from Indira Vihar, North-East Delhi, a 26-year-old woman was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly throwing acid on her younger neighbor. The attack occurred while the victim was busy with wedding preparations, including a traditional henna ceremony.

The accused allegedly carried out the attack because she was in a relationship with the victim’s fiancé and could not accept their upcoming marriage.

The Incident: A Betrayal of Trust
According to police and family statements, the accused was a frequent visitor to the victim’s house and was treated like a family friend.

The Setup: On Tuesday morning, the accused spent time with the family and had breakfast. She returned around noon with a sipper, asking the victim to apply henna on her hands.

The Attack: While the victim was applying the henna, the accused pulled out another sipper—which she claimed contained lemon water—and splashed the corrosive liquid onto the victim’s face and upper body.

The Taunt: Witnesses and family members claim the accused yelled, “Now, you drink this,” as the victim’s skin and clothes began to burn.

Medical Condition and Police Action
The victim, a postgraduate student at IGNOU, was rushed to Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital.

Injuries: She has suffered extensive facial burns and is reportedly struggling with her vision.

Legal Charges: A case has been registered under Section 124(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (causing grievous hurt by acid) at the Gokalpuri police station.

The Motive: Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-East) Ashish Mishra stated that the accused admitted to a long-term relationship with the victim’s fiancé. While the fiancé has not been questioned yet, phone records confirm frequent communication between him and the accused.

The Accused’s Background
Family members of the accused revealed that she had been undergoing treatment for depression for nearly a decade and was prone to uncontrollable bouts of anger. She is a D.El.Ed (Diploma in Elementary Education) graduate who aspired to be a teacher. Police have seized her medical records as part of the ongoing investigation.

A Ruined Celebration
The victim was set to have a joint wedding ceremony with her older sister on April 19, 2026. Her fiancé, who works as a special educator in Noida, is now under the scanner of the investigation as police look into the depth of his involvement with the accused.
