The Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA has secured a resounding victory in the Assam Assembly elections 2026, winning a third consecutive term in the state. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma thanked voters for their continued support, calling the mandate a reflection of the government’s performance and development-focused governance.

Addressing a press conference, Sarma described the result as “unprecedented,” noting that it marked the first time the BJP had secured a clear majority on its own in Assam.

Massive Mandate For BJP

The BJP emerged as the single largest party with 82 seats in the 126-member Assembly, comfortably crossing the majority mark. The victory cements the party’s dominance in the northeastern state and reinforces its political foothold in the region.

Sharing his reaction on social media, Sarma wrote, “Hat-trick with a century!”, referring to the NDA’s overall tally crossing the 100-seat mark.

Sarma’s Big Win In Jalukbari

Sarma himself registered a landslide victory from the Jalukbari constituency, defeating Congress candidate Bidisha Neog by a margin of 89,434 votes.

He secured 1,27,151 votes, while Neog managed 37,717 votes, underlining the Chief Minister’s strong electoral base.

Key Upset In Jorhat

In one of the most closely watched contests, veteran BJP leader Hitendra Nath Goswami defeated Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi in the Jorhat seat by over 23,000 votes.

Goswami’s grassroots campaign helped him clinch his sixth term as an MLA, while Gogoi’s attempt to enter the state Assembly ended in defeat. Gogoi is currently serving as a three-term Member of Parliament from Jorhat in the Lok Sabha.

Party-Wise Tally

  • BJP: 82 seats
  • Indian National Congress: 19 seats
  • Bodoland People’s Front (BPF): 10 seats
  • Asom Gana Parishad (AGP): 10 seats
  • All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF): 2 seats
  • Raijor Dal: 2 seats
  • All India Trinamool Congress: 1 seat

Vote Share Highlights

In terms of vote share, the BJP secured 37.82%, while the Congress followed with 29.83%, indicating a significant gap between the two major parties.

‘Mandate For Development’

Sarma credited the victory to what he described as the “positive work” of the state government and the Centre’s development push under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The result signals strong voter endorsement for the BJP’s governance model in Assam and sets the stage for another five years of NDA rule in the state.
