Himanta Biswa Sarma is set to take oath as Assam Chief Minister for a second consecutive term on Tuesday as the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) formally begins its new government in the state following its sweeping win in the 2026 Assembly elections.
Alongside Sarma, four senior leaders are expected to be sworn in as cabinet ministers, according to sources familiar with the developments.
The leaders likely to join the new cabinet include former Union Minister Rameswar Teli, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) chief Atul Bora, Bodoland People’s Front leader Charan Boro and senior BJP leader Ajanta Neog.
Ranjeet Kumar Dass To Become Assam Assembly Speaker
In another important political development, senior BJP leader Ranjeet Kumar Dass is expected to take charge as the new Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly, indicating a broader reshuffle of responsibilities within the ruling alliance.
The swearing-in ceremony comes days after Sarma and his council of ministers submitted their resignations to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya following the official notification of the Assam Assembly election results.
NDA Registers Massive Victory In Assam Elections
The BJP-led NDA scripted history by securing a third consecutive term in Assam. The alliance won 102 seats in the 126-member Assembly, with the BJP alone crossing the majority mark comfortably.
The emphatic mandate paved the way for the NDA’s return to power with a strengthened political position in the northeastern state.
After submitting his resignation, Sarma had posted on X that he formally initiated the process for the formation of the new government and recommended dissolution of the 15th Assam Legislative Assembly.
Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya subsequently asked Sarma to continue as caretaker chief minister until the formation of the new government.
PM Modi Likely To Attend Swearing-In Ceremony
Earlier, Sarma had said the NDA intended to invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the swearing-in ceremony, describing the election result as a “historic win” for the alliance.
The BJP leadership had appointed Union Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda as the central observer and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini as co-observer for the selection of the BJP legislature party leader in Assam.
Sarma had earlier indicated that the legislature party meeting would be held before May 11, following which NDA legislators would formally elect their leader for government formation.
