A California man accused of attempting to assassinate US President Donald Trump during a White House press gala last month has pleaded not guilty in a federal court in Washington, according to multiple US media reports.

The accused, identified as 31-year-old Cole Allen, appeared before a federal district court on Monday wearing an orange prison jumpsuit and handcuffs. During the hearing, Allen formally denied all charges linked to the April 25 incident that unfolded during the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner at a hotel in downtown Washington DC.

Authorities have charged Allen with four serious federal offences, including attempting to assassinate the US president. If convicted, he could face life imprisonment.

What Charges Does Cole Allen Face?

According to prosecutors, Allen has been charged with:

  • Attempting to assassinate the President of the United States
  • Transporting firearms and ammunition across state lines with intent to commit a felony
  • Using a firearm during a violent crime
  • Assaulting a federal officer

Investigators allege that Allen travelled from California to Washington by train carrying multiple weapons, including a shotgun, a handgun and several knives.

Officials described Allen as a highly educated individual who previously worked as a teacher and engineer.

What Happened At The White House Gala?

The alleged attack took place during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, an annual event attended by journalists, politicians, celebrities and members of the administration.

According to prosecutors, Allen attempted to breach security at the venue and charged through a checkpoint carrying weapons. Law enforcement officers immediately intervened and tackled him before he could reach the main event area.

Sources said President Donald Trump was quickly evacuated from the venue by Secret Service personnel after gunshots were heard.

A Secret Service officer reportedly fired multiple rounds at Allen during the confrontation, but none of the shots hit him.

Authorities confirmed that Allen never came into direct contact with Trump or other guests attending the event.

Third Alleged Assassination Attempt In Less Than Two Years

The incident marks the third alleged assassination attempt involving Trump in under two years.

In 2024, Trump survived an assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Butler, where a gunman opened fire, killing one audience member and grazing Trump’s ear.

Months later, another armed suspect was arrested near Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach while the president was playing golf.

Trump Had Attended Dinner Despite Previous Boycotts

Interestingly, Trump had traditionally boycotted the White House Correspondents’ dinner during earlier years. However, he chose to attend this year’s event, making the security breach even more significant.

Federal investigators continue to examine Allen’s motives, travel history and communications as part of the ongoing probe.
