The ongoing Kedarnath Dham Yatra faced significant disruptions on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, as a two-day Orange Alert for inclement weather took effect across the Rudraprayag district. Heavy rain and low visibility at high altitudes forced the district administration to temporarily suspend all helicopter services to the shrine. The move comes as part of a heightened safety protocol aimed at protecting thousands of pilgrims currently navigating the treacherous Himalayan terrain.
Helicopter Services Suspended Across Multiple Hubs
Due to the unpredictable weather and bone-chilling cold at the Kedarnath Dham, flight operations have been grounded not only at the shrine’s helipad but also at key transit points including Phata, Sonprayag, Sersi, and Guptkashi. Nandan Singh Rajwar, the District Disaster Management Officer (DDMO), confirmed that the administration is monitoring the situation minute-by-minute. “Helicopter services are being halted whenever weather conditions deteriorate to ensure the safety of devotees remains the top priority,” Rajwar stated.
‘Operation Kalanemi’: Cracking Down on Anti-Social Elements
In addition to weather challenges, the Rudraprayag administration has tightened security to maintain the sanctity of the pilgrimage. District Magistrate Vishal Mishra announced the launch of ‘Operation Kalanemi’, a specialized verification drive targeting individuals disguised as sadhus (monks) who are allegedly engaging in anti-social activities.
- Directive: Following instructions from Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, the district police are verifying the identities of suspicious individuals to prevent any unrest or inconvenience to genuine devotees.
- Law and Order: DM Mishra emphasized that anyone found creating a disturbance under the guise of a devotee will face strict legal action to ensure a “foolproof” security environment.
Advisory for Pilgrims: Safety First
With the orange alert still active, pilgrims are being urged to exercise extreme caution. The administration has deployed DDRF (District Disaster Response Force) teams, sector magistrates, and additional police personnel along the entire travel route. Travelers are strictly advised to:
- Check Live Weather Updates before starting the trek from Gaurikund or Sonprayag.
- Carry Adequate Woolens, as temperatures have plummeted significantly at the shrine.
- Follow Official Guidelines and cooperate with security personnel during identity verification drives.
