BJP leader Ravneet Singh Bittu has resigned from his position as Union Minister of State for Railways and Food Processing Industries.
The resignation was accepted by President Droupadi Murmu on Friday. While no official reason has been announced, the move comes amid reports that Bittu is preparing to play a key role in the Punjab Assembly elections, which are scheduled for next year.
President Accepts Ravneet Singh Bittu’s Resignation
The President’s Office has accepted Bittu’s resignation, bringing an end to his tenure as Minister of State in the Union government.
His exit has sparked political discussions, especially as the BJP prepares its strategy for the upcoming Punjab elections.
Although the government has not released a detailed statement on the reasons behind the resignation, political observers believe Bittu could now focus entirely on strengthening the party’s presence in Punjab.
From Congress to BJP
Ravneet Singh Bittu joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in March 2024, just before the Lok Sabha elections.
His decision to leave the Indian National Congress surprised many political leaders and even members of his own family.
After joining the BJP, he contested the Ludhiana Lok Sabha seat but was defeated by Congress candidate Amarinder Singh Raja Warring.
Despite the loss, the BJP projected Bittu as one of its prominent Sikh leaders in Punjab.
Amit Shah Backed Bittu During Election Campaign
During the 2024 Lok Sabha campaign, Union Home Minister Amit Shah actively promoted Bittu as an important Sikh face for the BJP in Punjab.
The party viewed his entry as a significant boost to its efforts to expand its support base in the state.
With the Punjab Assembly elections approaching, Bittu is expected to play a larger organisational and campaign role.
A Long Political Career
Ravneet Singh Bittu comes from a well-known political family in Punjab.
He is the grandson of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, who was assassinated in 1995.
Bittu first entered the Lok Sabha in 2009, representing Anandpur Sahib. He later won the Ludhiana parliamentary seat in both 2014 and 2019.
During his time in the Congress, he also served as the party’s Leader and Whip in the Lok Sabha, holding several important parliamentary responsibilities.
Focus Shifts to Punjab Politics
With his resignation now accepted, attention is likely to shift towards Bittu’s future political role in Punjab.
Reports suggest he may take charge of the BJP’s preparations for the upcoming Assembly elections as the party looks to strengthen its position in the state.
However, the BJP has not yet made any official announcement regarding his next responsibility.
