The Road to Power: Navigating the Majority Mark

Following a historic debut in the Tamil Nadu assembly elections, actor-turned-politician Vijay and his party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), have emerged as the single largest force in the state. Securing 107 seats in the 234-member Assembly, the party now sits just 11 seats shy of the 118-seat majority threshold.

As the single largest party, TVK is expected to receive an invitation from the governor to form the government. While a minority administration is a possible starting point, party insiders are actively working to secure the necessary outside support to ensure stability.

Potential Paths to a Majority

To reach the required numbers, TVK is reportedly exploring several strategic alliances:

  • Leveraging the DMK Alliance: There is potential for support from parties currently aligned with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). These include the Congress (5 seats), the Communist Party of India (2 seats), the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (2 seats), and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (2 seats).
  • PMK Support: Another viable route involves the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), which holds 5 seats in the current assembly.
  • Ideological Barriers: A formal engagement with the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) seems highly unlikely. Vijay has explicitly identified the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)—a key ally of the AIADMK—as his primary ideological adversary.

Drawing parallels to the 2006 political landscape, when a minority DMK government functioned successfully with outside backing, TVK leadership remains confident. Rhevanth Charan, the party’s 30-year-old Maduravoyal candidate, emphasized that the party has no fear of instability and expects to form the government soon.

A Historic Debut

Vijay’s entry into electoral politics has been nothing short of transformative. By choosing to run independently after failing to secure a power-sharing agreement with other parties, he took a significant gamble that ultimately paid off.

Key highlights of this performance include:

  • Dominating Chennai: TVK made a major impact in the capital, winning 14 out of 16 seats in a region traditionally dominated by the DMK.
  • Personal Victory: Vijay successfully won his own contests in both Perambur and Trichy East.

As intense backchannel negotiations continue, the state awaits further announcements. Reports suggest that a swearing-in ceremony could take place as early as May 7.
