Atalanta Midfielder Ederson Called Up as Carlo Ancelotti Faces Right-Back Dilemma
Brazil’s preparations for the FIFA World Cup have suffered a setback after defender Wesley was ruled out of the tournament due to injury.
The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) confirmed on Sunday that the AS Roma player has been withdrawn from the squad after suffering a muscle injury during Brazil’s recent friendly match against Egypt.
As a result, Ederson has been called up to replace him in the 26-man squad.
Injury Occurred During Victory Over Egypt
Wesley picked up the injury during Brazil’s 2-1 win over Egypt national football team in a friendly match played in Cleveland on Saturday.
Medical examinations conducted after the game revealed damage to the adductor muscle in his left thigh.
According to the CBF, an MRI scan confirmed the extent of the injury, making it impossible for the defender to continue with the World Cup campaign.
The federation expressed disappointment over the setback and wished the player a speedy recovery.
Brazil Lose Their Only Specialist Right-Back
The injury creates a significant challenge for Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti.
Wesley was the only natural right-back included in Brazil’s World Cup squad. Therefore, Ancelotti will now need to find alternative solutions for the position ahead of the team’s opening match.
The absence of a specialist right-back could force tactical adjustments as Brazil begins its quest for another world title.
Danilo and Ibanez Could Fill the Gap
With Wesley unavailable, Brazil may turn to experienced defenders Danilo and Ibanez to cover the right side of defense.
Although both players are primarily central defenders, they possess the versatility needed to operate in wider positions when required.
Consequently, Ancelotti is expected to evaluate different defensive combinations during training before Brazil’s opening fixture.
Ederson Joins the Squad
To fill the vacant spot in the squad, Brazil has called up Atalanta midfielder Ederson.
The CBF confirmed that the midfielder will arrive in the United States on Monday and immediately link up with the rest of the team.
While Ederson is not a direct replacement in terms of position, his inclusion adds depth and energy to Brazil’s midfield options.
Brazil Begin World Cup Campaign Against Morocco
Brazil will start its World Cup journey against Morocco national football team on Saturday in its first Group C match.
The five-time world champions will then face Haiti national football team and Scotland national football team in the remaining group-stage fixtures.
Despite the injury setback, Brazil remains one of the tournament favorites and will be aiming to secure a record-extending sixth World Cup title.
Ancelotti Faces Early Test
The loss of Wesley presents Carlo Ancelotti with an early challenge as he prepares for his first World Cup campaign with Brazil.
However, Brazil’s squad still boasts considerable experience and quality across the pitch. The coaching staff will now focus on finding the right defensive balance before the crucial opener against Morocco.
As the tournament approaches, fans will be hoping that Wesley’s absence does not derail Brazil’s ambitions of lifting football’s biggest prize once again.
