In what turned out to be a forgettable outing in the field, Punjab Kings struggled badly during their high-stakes IPL 2026 clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Wednesday. A series of dropped catches and a missed stumping opportunity cost the team dearly, leaving veteran spinner Yuzvendra Chahal visibly frustrated.
Missed Chances Derail Punjab Kings Early Momentum
Punjab Kings’ fielding woes began early in the innings when Cooper Connolly dropped Ishan Kishan at deep backward square leg off Lockie Ferguson’s bowling. The early reprieve set the tone for what would become a disappointing fielding display.
The situation worsened when Shashank Singh and Ferguson dropped additional chances off Chahal’s bowling. The leg-spinner, who could have easily picked up a four-wicket haul within his first three overs, was instead left empty-handed due to repeated lapses in the field.
Prabhsimran’s Miss Adds To Frustration
Adding to Punjab’s troubles, wicketkeeper Prabhsimran Singh missed a straightforward stumping opportunity off Chahal in the 11th over. The costly error summed up the team’s off night, prompting commentators to remark that Chahal was enduring a “rotten night in terms of fortune.”
Shashank Singh Under Spotlight
Shashank Singh, who returned to the playing XI after missing the previous match against Gujarat Titans, had a particularly tough game. With four dropped catches in IPL 2026 so far, he now holds the unwanted record for the most missed chances by a Punjab Kings player this season.
Head coach Ricky Ponting empathised with the struggling fielder, saying on-air, “Poor Shashank Singh, it seems the ball is following him everywhere.”
Captains Speak Ahead Of Match
After winning the toss, Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer opted to bowl first, citing lessons learned from recent losses.
“We have learned a lot from the last few matches. No complaints about travel — everyone is holding up well as professionals. SRH chased well last game, so we decided to bowl,” Iyer said.
On the other side, Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Pat Cummins admitted he would have made the same decision.
“I would have bowled first as well. The crowd has supported us well. Hopefully, we can put up a strong total,” Cummins said, confirming the return of all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy to the playing XI.
Fielding Proves Costly In Tight Contest
In a match that could have major implications on the points table, Punjab Kings’ fielding errors may prove decisive. Dropped chances not only denied Chahal early success but also allowed Sunrisers Hyderabad to build momentum at crucial stages.
If PBKS are to remain strong contenders this season, tightening their fielding will be just as important as their batting and bowling performances.
