Jaipur: Riyan Parag finally found his rhythm in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, bringing an end to a prolonged lean patch with a crucial knock against the Delhi Capitals on Friday.
Leading Rajasthan Royals, Parag scored a composed half-century in just 33 balls — his first in nine matches this season. Coming into the game with only 117 runs from his previous outings, the innings marked a much-needed return to form for the young captain.
He went on to play a match-defining knock of 90 off 50 deliveries, narrowly missing out on what would have been his maiden IPL century. His innings was cut short in the 17th over when he was dismissed by Mitchell Starc.
Key Partnership Turns the Game
Parag anchored the innings with a vital century-plus partnership alongside Dhruv Jurel, stabilising the Royals after a shaky start and putting them in a commanding position.
After reaching his half-century, Parag opted for a restrained celebration, briefly glancing towards the dugout where teammates rose to applaud the effort — a moment that reflected both relief and quiet determination.
Comeback After Controversy
The innings comes just days after Parag made headlines for the wrong reasons. During Rajasthan Royals’ previous match against Punjab Kings in Mullanpur, he was caught on camera using a vape inside the dressing room.
The clip quickly went viral, triggering debates around player discipline and the appropriateness of such behaviour during a professional match.
The IPL governing body subsequently fined Parag 25% of his match fee and handed him one demerit point for breaching the league’s Code of Conduct.
In an official statement, the IPL confirmed that the offence fell under conduct that could bring the game into disrepute. The incident occurred during the second innings when Parag was seen using the device inside the team area.
Parag accepted the sanction imposed by match referee Amit Sharma, admitting to the breach.
Further Action Possible
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is also reportedly evaluating whether further action is required against the player or the franchise to ensure that the integrity and image of the IPL are maintained.
