Dharamsala:
Mumbai Indians pulled off a dramatic last-ball victory against Punjab Kings in a high-scoring IPL 2026 clash on Thursday, riding on a sensational unbeaten knock from Tilak Varma to chase down a daunting 201-run target.
In a must-win encounter at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala, Tilak Varma played one of the finest innings of the season, smashing an unbeaten 75 off just 33 deliveries to steer Mumbai Indians home with one ball remaining. His explosive innings ensured MI completed the chase at 201/4 and handed Punjab Kings their fifth consecutive defeat.

The run chase began aggressively for Mumbai Indians as opener Ryan Rickelton provided early momentum with a fluent 48. The left-hander attacked the PBKS bowlers from the outset, helping MI keep pace with the required run rate during the powerplay.
After Rickelton’s departure, Tilak Varma took complete control of the chase. Mixing fearless strokeplay with calculated aggression, the left-hander dismantled the Punjab bowling attack with boundaries all around the ground. He found excellent support from Will Jacks, who played a blistering cameo of 25 not out off just 10 balls to finish the chase in style.
The duo ensured Mumbai kept their composure despite the pressure of a steep target and the falling required rate in the final overs. Tilak’s innings, filled with clean hitting and innovative shots, proved to be the defining difference between the two sides.
Earlier in the evening, Punjab Kings posted a competitive 200/8 after being asked to bat first by stand-in Mumbai Indians captain Jasprit Bumrah.
Punjab got off to a flying start through Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh. The opening pair added quick runs during the powerplay before Deepak Chahar provided Mumbai with the first breakthrough by dismissing Arya.
Prabhsimran Singh, however, continued his attacking approach and made Mumbai pay dearly for missed opportunities in the field. The PBKS opener survived multiple chances and went on to score a brilliant 57, anchoring the innings through the middle overs.
He stitched together an important partnership with Cooper Connolly, who added useful runs to keep Punjab’s scoring rate healthy. Prabhsimran targeted both pace and spin with confidence, clearing the ropes regularly and bringing up his half-century in aggressive fashion.
However, the momentum shifted dramatically after Shardul Thakur triggered a collapse in the middle overs. The experienced pacer, after an expensive start, bounced back brilliantly to pick up four crucial wickets.
Shardul first dismissed the dangerous Prabhsimran before removing Punjab skipper Shreyas Iyer shortly after. The collapse deepened as Raj Bawa and Corbin Bosch chipped in with key wickets, reducing Punjab Kings to a precarious position.
Shashank Singh, Marco Jansen and Suryansh Shedge all departed cheaply as PBKS suddenly lost control after looking set for a much bigger total.
Just when Mumbai appeared to have pulled things back, Azmatullah Omarzai launched a fierce counterattack in the death overs. The Afghanistan all-rounder smashed 38 off only 17 balls, injecting fresh momentum into the innings.
Vishnu Vinod and Xavier Bartlett then added valuable late runs as Punjab Kings hammered 53 runs in the final three overs. Mumbai’s sloppy fielding and dropped catches further hurt them, allowing PBKS to cross the 200-run mark.
Despite the late assault, Mumbai Indians held their nerve during the chase thanks to Tilak Varma’s brilliance under pressure.
The victory gives Mumbai a major boost in the IPL 2026 points table race, while Punjab Kings continue to struggle after suffering their fifth straight defeat in the tournament.
