Emerse Faé has strongly criticised comments made by former Germany midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, describing them as remarks that relied on racial stereotypes.

The controversy began before Germany’s FIFA World Cup match against Ivory Coast, when Schweinsteiger discussed the style of play the German team could expect from their African opponents during a television broadcast.

Schweinsteiger’s Comments Spark Debate

Speaking on German broadcaster ARD, Schweinsteiger described Ivory Coast’s football as “a bit African football, a bit unorthodox, a bit wild” and suggested the team was “perhaps also not so conditioned by tactics.” He added that Germany should be prepared because Ivory Coast could be unpredictable.

His comments quickly drew criticism from journalists, football observers and fans, who argued that they reinforced long-standing stereotypes about African football.

Emerse Faé Responds After Historic Victory

Faé addressed the issue after Ivory Coast defeated Curacao 2-0 to qualify for the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time in the country’s history.

The Ivory Coast coach said he hoped Schweinsteiger’s remarks were simply a “clumsy statement” rather than a reflection of his personal beliefs.

However, Faé also said the comments could fairly be described as racist.

He explained that Ivory Coast’s success is built not only on physical ability but also on tactical preparation, discipline and intelligent decision-making.

According to Faé, suggesting that African teams lack tactical awareness ignores the hard work and planning that go into modern football.

Coach Questions Motive Behind the Remarks

Faé also questioned whether Schweinsteiger was trying to attract attention in his broadcasting career by using outdated stereotypes.

He admitted that he was disappointed by the comments and said they did not reflect the respect that should exist in international football.

The coach stressed that his players deserve recognition for their tactical understanding as much as for their athletic qualities.

Journalists Also Criticise the Remarks

The controversy gained momentum after several German journalists publicly criticised Schweinsteiger’s analysis.

Sports commentator Patrick Schnitzler wrote that such statements reflected racist prejudices that are often repeated without people realising it.

Meanwhile, journalist Philipp Awounou argued that the comments echoed colonial-era stereotypes about African football. However, he also clarified that he did not believe Schweinsteiger himself was racist.

Ivory Coast Continues Impressive World Cup Campaign

Despite the controversy, Ivory Coast remains focused on its World Cup journey.

The team’s victory over Curacao secured a historic place in the knockout rounds, marking one of the country’s biggest achievements on football’s biggest stage.

As the tournament progresses, Faé and his squad will now look to build on that success while keeping their attention on the challenges ahead.
