Authorities say the five-storey structure lacked required approvals; BJP backs action while TMC has not responded.

July 18, 2026: West Bengal authorities on Saturday began demolishing a five-storey Trinamool Congress (TMC) party office in South 24 Parganas allegedly linked to the party’s national general secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee. Officials claimed the building at Amtala was constructed without the mandatory building sanction plan, prompting the demolition drive.

The operation is being carried out under the supervision of local Block Development Officer (BDO) and Block Land & Land Reforms (BLLRO) officials. A joint deployment of West Bengal Police and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) has been made to maintain law and order, while fire services personnel remain on standby. Authorities have also barricaded the area during the demolition.

According to district officials, a notice declaring the structure unauthorised was issued on June 30, asking TMC office-bearers to appear for a hearing on July 15. A reminder was pasted on the building on July 7, but officials claimed there was no response, following which demolition began. Meanwhile, BJP workers gathered at the site in support of the action, alleging the office was illegally built and the land was forcibly occupied by TMC-backed individuals. The Trinamool Congress had not issued an official response at the time of filing the report.
