The High Court granted interim relief during an urgent hearing after authorities began demolishing the Trinamool Congress MP’s office over alleged building violations.
July 19, 2026: The Calcutta High Court on Sunday stayed the demolition of Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee’s party office in South 24 Parganas, granting interim relief during an urgent hearing. The order came hours after district authorities began demolishing the five-storey building at Amtala, alleging that it had been constructed without the required building sanction plan.
Earlier in the day, the demolition was carried out using bulldozers under the supervision of officials from the Block Development Office (BDO) and the Block Land and Land Reforms Office (BLLRO). A joint deployment of the West Bengal Police and the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) was made to maintain security at the site, while the area was barricaded and fire services personnel remained on standby. Authorities had claimed that notices declaring the structure unauthorised were issued on June 30, followed by a reminder on July 7, but alleged that no response was received from the occupants.
The demolition had also sparked a political controversy, with BJP leaders supporting the action and alleging that the office had been constructed illegally and the land was occupied unlawfully. The Trinamool Congress, however, challenged the action before the Calcutta High Court through an urgent petition. During the special hearing, the High Court stayed the demolition proceedings, providing temporary relief to the TMC leader. The matter is expected to come up for further hearing, where the court will examine the legality of the demolition process and the claims made by both sides.
