Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off India’s first hydrogen-powered train from Jind, Haryana

July 17, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off India’s first hydrogen-powered train from Jind, Haryana, marking a major milestone in the country’s clean transportation and green energy initiatives. The train will initially operate between Jind and Sonipat, covering an 89-kilometre route in approximately two hours. Featuring 10 coaches, the train will stop at 14 stations and operate at a maximum speed of 75 kmph, with passenger fares expected to range between ₹5 and ₹25.

The inaugural train has been specially decorated for the occasion, with school students and local residents invited to witness the historic launch. Children participating in the event expressed excitement about becoming part of India’s first hydrogen train journey while highlighting the importance of pollution-free public transport. The launch is expected to strengthen Indian Railways’ efforts to adopt environmentally sustainable technologies.

Unlike conventional diesel trains, hydrogen-powered trains use hydrogen fuel cells to generate electricity, with water vapour as the primary emission, significantly reducing pollution. With this launch, India joins countries such as Germany, France, Sweden, and China in adopting hydrogen rail technology. During his visit to Haryana, Prime Minister Modi will also inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for several development projects, including an elevated railway track and medical colleges.
