As the Bharatiya Janata Party heads towards a sweeping victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections, one name has quietly emerged at the centre of the party’s success — Sunil Bansal.

Bansal, Known for staying away from the limelight, the BJP’s National General Secretary is widely credited as the chief architect behind the party’s landmark performance in the state.

While several senior leaders played visible roles in the campaign, insiders point to Bansal’s organisational depth and strategic precision as the backbone of the victory. His ability to strengthen booth-level networks and align state leadership with central strategy proved decisive in a state long dominated by regional forces.

From RSS Roots To BJP’s Election Architect

A native of Rajasthan, Bansal began his political journey with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He was elected General Secretary of Rajasthan University in 1989 and became a full-time RSS pracharak a year later.

Ahead of the 2014 general elections, the RSS deputed him to the BJP, marking the beginning of his rise within the party. His early work in Uttar Pradesh under the leadership of Amit Shah quickly earned him recognition for discipline and execution.

Key Role In BJP’s Uttar Pradesh Dominance

Bansal played a pivotal role in implementing strategies such as “Panna Pramukh” and “Mera Booth Sabse Mazboot”, which focused on micro-level voter outreach. These efforts contributed significantly to the BJP’s record-breaking win of 73 out of 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh in 2014.

He went on to oversee the party’s organisation in the state for nearly eight years, playing a crucial role in the 2017 Assembly landslide and subsequent electoral successes. His coordination between the party machinery and the Yogi Adityanath government further strengthened BJP’s grip in the state.

Expanding BJP’s Footprint Across States

In 2022, Bansal was elevated to the national stage under party president JP Nadda and given responsibility for key states, including Odisha, Telangana, and West Bengal.

In Odisha, he helped the BJP dismantle the long-standing dominance of Naveen Patnaik, leading to a historic electoral sweep and the formation of the party’s first government in the state. In Telangana, the BJP improved its presence, reflecting steady organisational growth.

Turning Around BJP’s Fortunes In West Bengal

Despite a dip in the BJP’s performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal, Bansal quickly recalibrated the party’s strategy. He focused on:

  • Resolving internal factional issues
  • Strengthening booth-level structures
  • Re-engaging disgruntled leaders
  • Using data-driven analysis of caste equations and local issues

Working closely with Amit Shah, as well as leaders like Bhupender Yadav, Biplab Kumar Deb, and Amit Malviya, Bansal ensured seamless coordination between central and state units.

His emphasis on micro-management and voter targeting helped the BJP surge past the majority mark, ending over a decade of rule by Mamata Banerjee’s party.

The “Election Engineer”

Often described as the BJP’s “election engineer,” Bansal is known for his calm demeanour and methodical approach. Despite his growing influence, he continues to operate behind the scenes, letting results speak for his work.

With key Assembly elections due in states like Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and Punjab in the coming months, leaders like Sunil Bansal are expected to play a crucial role in shaping the BJP’s future electoral strategy.
