The pristine waters of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are about to become a stage for an unprecedented display of skill and patriotism. In a bid to cement its status as a global adventure tourism hub, the islands are gearing up for two massive underwater world record attempts at Swaraj Dweep (Havelock Island).
The Venue: Radhanagar Beach
The attempts will take place near the iconic Radhanagar Beach, renowned for its high visibility and calm, crystal-clear waters. These conditions are essential for the complex coordination required for large-scale underwater formations.
Record Attempt 1: The Giant Underwater Tricolour
The centerpiece of the event is the unfurling of the largest national flag ever displayed beneath the sea.
- Dimensions: The flag is expected to measure approximately 60 by 40 metres.
- The Challenge: Managing a surface area of this size underwater requires over 200 professional divers working in perfect synchronization to manage buoyancy and water currents.
Record Attempt 2: The 10-Metre Human Stack
Simultaneously, divers will attempt to set a record for the tallest underwater human stack.
- The Target: A vertical formation rising 10 metres from the seabed.
- The Complexity: Unlike land-based stunts, this requires divers to balance while managing breathing apparatus and varying water pressure levels at different depths of the stack.
Putting India on the Global Diving Map
While these feats are intended for the record books, the underlying goal is a strategic boost to experiential tourism. By showcasing the technical expertise of Indian diving instructors and the islands’ marine biodiversity, authorities hope to attract international divers who typically frequent Southeast Asian hubs like Thailand or Indonesia.
Local authorities and emergency response teams have implemented strict safety protocols, ensuring that the marine environment remains protected during the event. If successful, these records will serve as a powerful marketing tool for the Andamans as India’s premier scuba diving destination.
