British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing growing political pressure after dozens of lawmakers from his own Labour Party reportedly urged him to either resign or announce a clear timetable for stepping down following the party’s poor performance in recent local elections.
The political turmoil intensified on Monday after several ministerial aides resigned and more than 70 Labour MPs publicly expressed dissatisfaction with Starmer’s leadership. According to reports, some senior cabinet ministers have also advised him to prepare an exit plan as discontent within the party continues to rise.
However, despite the increasing calls for change, no formal leadership challenge has yet been triggered against the British Prime Minister.
Has A Leadership Contest Begun?
At present, Labour’s internal rules mean that dissatisfaction alone is not enough to remove a sitting leader. Party lawmakers must unite behind an alternative candidate before a formal leadership contest can begin.
Most critics within the party are currently demanding that Starmer voluntarily set out a departure timeline rather than launching a direct no-confidence move against him.
Former junior minister Catherine West has reportedly started informal efforts to gauge support for replacing Starmer, though she has not officially declared herself as a leadership contender.
How Can Keir Starmer Be Removed?
Under Labour Party rules, any challenger seeking to contest the leadership must secure backing from at least 20 per cent of Labour MPs.
With Labour currently holding 403 seats in Parliament, a potential challenger would need support from at least 81 lawmakers to officially enter the race.
In addition to parliamentary backing, candidates must also receive support from grassroots Labour organisations and affiliated groups such as trade unions.
If Starmer decides to contest the leadership battle, he would automatically be included on the ballot.
What Happens If Multiple Candidates Enter?
If only one candidate qualifies for the contest, they become Labour leader unopposed and automatically take over as Prime Minister.
However, if multiple candidates secure the required support, the final decision would be made through a vote involving Labour Party members and affiliated organisations across the country.
The winner of that contest would then become both Labour leader and Britain’s next Prime Minister.
Election Losses Deepen Crisis
The pressure on Starmer comes after Labour suffered significant setbacks in recent local elections, triggering fresh concerns over the party’s popularity and electoral strategy.
While Starmer had appealed for more time to rebuild voter trust, many within Labour appear unconvinced, leading to the latest wave of criticism and calls for leadership change.
