Over 9,000 people affected as a devastating fire engulfs a water village in Sabah, leaving widespread destruction but no casualties

April 19, 2026: A massive fire tore through a coastal “water village” in Sabah on Sunday, destroying around 1,000 makeshift homes and displacing thousands of residents. The blaze broke out in the early hours in Sandakan district, where many low-income families, including indigenous and stateless communities, live in closely packed wooden houses built on stilts over water. Authorities described the incident as one of the largest and most devastating fires in the region.

According to local officials, the fire impacted more than 9,000 residents as flames rapidly spread across nearly 10 acres of densely populated housing. Firefighters faced major challenges in controlling the blaze due to narrow access routes, low sea tide, and strong winds that intensified the fire. Emergency teams deployed personnel from multiple stations, but logistical constraints delayed efforts to contain the flames.

Despite the scale of destruction, no casualties were reported, and authorities confirmed that the situation is now under control. Anwar Ibrahim stated that the federal government is working closely with local authorities to provide immediate relief, including temporary shelter and essential support for affected families. Efforts are now focused on rehabilitation and ensuring the safety of displaced residents.
