The United States and Iran have officially signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending hostilities

June 18, 2026: The United States and Iran have officially signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at ending more than three months of conflict between the two countries. US President Donald Trump signed the agreement while attending the G7 Summit in France, while Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed it digitally from Tehran. The agreement came into effect immediately after both signatures, marking a major diplomatic development in relations between the two nations.

The MoU is expected to serve as a framework for future negotiations on key issues, including regional security, economic measures and Iran’s nuclear programme. Officials on both sides have described the agreement as an important step toward reducing tensions and promoting stability in the Middle East after months of conflict and economic disruption.

While supporters have welcomed the agreement as a breakthrough that could ease regional tensions and support global economic stability, critics argue that several provisions appear to align with long-standing Iranian demands. Questions have also been raised about whether Washington made significant concessions in order to secure the deal. Despite the debate, both countries have committed to continuing discussions under the framework established by the MoU.
