UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described the US-Iran peace agreement as a crucial step towards ending hostilities
June 15, 2026: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has welcomed the peace agreement reached between the United States and Iran, calling it a significant breakthrough for regional stability. The deal includes an immediate and permanent ceasefire, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and a framework for future negotiations aimed at resolving remaining disputes.
In a statement issued by UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, Guterres described the agreement as a critical step toward the peaceful settlement of the conflict. The understanding follows months of tensions between Washington and Tehran and is expected to ease pressure on global energy markets by restoring navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil shipments.
The UN chief also expressed appreciation for the role played by Pakistan, Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and other regional countries in supporting the negotiations. While the full details of the agreement have not yet been released, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi confirmed the deal and stated that Tehran would begin implementation after the formal signing ceremony scheduled in Switzerland on June 19. The United Nations has reiterated its readiness to support efforts toward a durable and comprehensive peace.
