Senior officials from the United States and Iran have launched technical negotiations in Switzerland
June 21, 2026: Senior officials from the United States and Iran are set to begin high-level technical talks in the Swiss resort town of Burgenstock amid growing tensions over the implementation of a recently signed agreement between the two countries. The discussions come as Iran continues to raise concerns over ongoing Israeli military operations in Lebanon, which Tehran claims violate commitments outlined in the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed earlier this week.
The Iranian delegation is being led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, while the US team is headed by Vice President JD Vance, along with special envoy Steve Witkoff and presidential adviser Jared Kushner. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir, and Qatar Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani are also expected to participate. Ahead of the talks, Vance expressed hope that progress could be made on both the nuclear issue and the Lebanon ceasefire.
Iranian officials have said their priority is ensuring that Washington fulfils commitments made under the agreement before broader negotiations move forward. Tehran is seeking progress on issues including the Lebanon ceasefire, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, easing sanctions on its oil sector, releasing frozen assets, and removing maritime restrictions. Iranian leaders have warned that the agreement must deliver tangible results, with technical discussions expected to continue over the next 60 days as both sides work towards a broader peace framework.
