President Donald Trump signed two executive orders aimed at accelerating quantum computing development
June 23, 2026: US President Donald Trump has signed two executive orders designed to strengthen America’s position in quantum computing and prepare government systems for future cybersecurity challenges. The first order directs federal agencies to support the development of advanced quantum computers capable of accelerating scientific research and encourages the deployment of quantum-enabled technologies across government operations. It also calls on the Pentagon to begin deploying quantum-enabled sensors by 2027.
The second order focuses on cybersecurity in what experts describe as a future “post-quantum” world. It aims to speed up the transition to post-quantum cryptography by 2031, ensuring that government and private-sector systems are protected against potential cyberattacks that could be carried out using powerful quantum computers. The move is intended to strengthen digital security before quantum technology becomes capable of breaking current encryption methods.
Quantum computing remains in its early stages, but the technology is viewed as a key strategic battleground between the United States and China. Speaking during the signing ceremony at the White House, Trump said the US would increase investment in quantum leadership to remain ahead globally. Major technology companies, including Google, IBM and Microsoft, are among those racing to develop practical quantum computers that could transform industries ranging from healthcare and finance to national security.
