Thousands of protesters in Albania have rallied against a luxury tourism project linked to Jared Kushner

June 10, 2026: A growing environmental protest movement in Albania has adopted the flamingo as its symbol while opposing a luxury tourism project linked to Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of US President Donald Trump. Dubbed the “Flamingo Revolution,” the demonstrations are focused on plans to develop a high-end resort on Sazan Island and the Zvernec coastline near Vlora. Protesters argue that the project could damage fragile ecosystems that serve as important habitats for flamingos and other protected species.

The controversy began after Kushner’s investment firm, Affinity Partners, unveiled plans for a large-scale tourism development that could reportedly include up to 10,000 hotel rooms. Environmental groups warn that the area is home to more than 200 migratory bird species, Mediterranean monk seals and nesting sea turtles. Public anger intensified after sections of the proposed development site were allegedly fenced off, leading to clashes between protesters and private security personnel.

While Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has defended discussions surrounding the project and said environmental assessments are ongoing, critics remain skeptical. Anti-corruption prosecutors have launched an investigation into the ownership and legal status of land linked to the development, and authorities have reportedly seized related assets. As the debate continues, the flamingo has become a powerful symbol of resistance against what activists describe as unchecked commercial development in protected areas.
