New Delhi: Amid an intensifying heatwave in the national capital, Rekha Gupta on Saturday announced a series of measures aimed at protecting residents, especially outdoor workers.
In a video statement, the Chief Minister directed that all workers — across both government and private sectors — must be given a mandatory rest period between 1 pm and 4 pm to minimise exposure to extreme heat.
“Heatwaves affect everyone, but labourers and workers exposed to the harsh afternoon sun are the most vulnerable. From 1 PM to 4 PM, every worker must be given rest as per government directions,” she said.
Relief Measures Announced
The Delhi government has rolled out multiple initiatives to tackle the heatwave:
- Drinking water is being made available in buses operated by the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC)
- Water volunteers have been deployed at bus shelters to distribute water and ORS
- Hospitals have been equipped with medicines and treatment facilities for heat-related illnesses
- Cooling areas are being set up to offer relief to the public
- Schools have already ensured access to drinking water and ORS for students
The Chief Minister also urged citizens to take precautions and look out for others during the extreme weather conditions.
‘Jaldoot’ Initiative Rolled Out
Transport Minister Pankaj Singh highlighted that drinking water arrangements have been made in nearly 3,000 DTC buses across the city.
As part of the Delhi Heatwave Action Plan, the DTC has launched the ‘Jaldoot’ initiative, deploying volunteers at 23 major bus terminals to provide free drinking water to commuters.
Weather Update and IMD Alert
Despite a brief spell of light to moderate rainfall earlier this week, temperatures in Delhi have risen again.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for the next two days, warning of possible rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds.
According to IMD officials, light rainfall accompanied by lightning and winds of 30–40 km/h, gusting up to 50 km/h, is expected on Sunday, with similar conditions likely to continue into Monday.
What It Means for Residents
While the heatwave continues to pose health risks, the government’s measures aim to reduce exposure and ensure access to essential resources like water and medical care. Residents are advised to stay hydrated, avoid peak afternoon hours, and follow official advisories.
