The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for several parts of Karnataka as rain activity is expected to intensify over the weekend. Bengaluru is also likely to receive moderate to heavy showers, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds.
According to IMD, a well-marked low-pressure area over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal, along with an associated cyclonic circulation, is driving the current weather conditions across southern India.
Several districts across Coastal Karnataka, South Interior Karnataka and parts of North Interior Karnataka have been placed under orange and yellow alerts. Areas including Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Shivamogga, Mysuru and Chamarajanagar are expected to witness heavy rainfall along with strong winds reaching 40–50 kmph.
Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Kolar, Tumakuru, Mandya and surrounding districts are also likely to experience light to moderate rain and thunderstorms during the next few days. Weather officials have warned residents about possible waterlogging, traffic congestion and reduced visibility during evening showers.
The rainfall activity is being linked to advancing pre-monsoon conditions, with IMD already indicating favourable conditions for an early southwest monsoon onset over Kerala and nearby regions.
Authorities have advised people to remain cautious during thunderstorms, avoid unnecessary travel during heavy downpours and stay away from vulnerable structures and waterlogged areas.
